Additional Job Details

The Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Maryland is recognized as one of the leading programs in its field within the United States and beyond. In addition to the B.A., Ph.D., and graduate certificate, our department offers undergraduate minors in WGSS, LGBTQ Studies, and Black Women’s Studies (offered jointly with the Department of African American and Africana Studies).

The Department hosts a vibrant community of scholars whose work reflects a wide range of interdisciplinary expertise. Our areas of strength include: Black women’s studies, Black feminist thought, and intersectionality; race and racialization, critical ethnic and diasporic studies, and anti-caste studies; arts, media, cultural, and literary studies; feminist science and technology studies, digital studies, and digital humanities; sexual cultures, queer and trans studies, and queer of color critique; transnational feminisms and global gender justice; Indigenous knowledge systems and Indigenous feminisms; and disability studies and health justice. We seek candidates whose work resonates with one or more of these areas and who are eager to contribute to ongoing departmental conversations about power, relationality, and transformative justice. We also welcome candidates whose work opens new directions or complements existing strengths in ways that deepen our shared commitments.

The Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies maintains a long-standing intellectual and institutional commitment to addressing the structural dynamics of race, racialization, and social injustice. We view the mentoring and training of graduate and undergraduate students as essential to transforming the power structures of the academy and cultivating more equitable futures. In alignment with the College of Arts and Humanities’ strategic commitments to transformative thinking, we continually challenge ourselves to build curricula, research agendas, and public-facing programs that are anti-racist, trans-inclusive, non-ableist, and grounded in the complexity of lived experience. We invite applicants to show how their research, teaching, and service reflect these principles, and how they contribute to building more just, creative, and connected worlds through feminist and interdisciplinary inquiry.
