OPPORTUNITY

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Coro Northern California will be entrusted with the strategic and operational leadership of the organization. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO will lead the mission of Coro Northern California by providing direction, vision, and guidance to ensure the organization's continued success and growth.

The next CEO will be a strategic, business-minded, operationally savvy, and culturally empathetic leader with demonstrated executive nonprofit experience. They will have a proven track record in securing fundraising from individual donors, foundations, government and earned revenue sources. The right candidate has demonstrated experience building and maintaining an inclusive internal culture promoting transparency, collaboration, and diversity. Their ability to provide operational and financial leadership is essential, along with the resourcefulness to effectively develop and lead teams. 

The CEO will influence and change the leadership journeys of hundreds of people, from high school students to C-level executives, to learning more about themselves, their communities, and what it takes to help foster a thriving democracy. This role provides an exciting opportunity to help define and expand Coro’s civic leadership portfolio and impact.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities of the Chief Executive Officer include:

Fundraising & Communications

• Drive strategic fundraising and elevate Coro’s brand and visibility by enhancing all aspects of communications, ensuring the organization’s mission and impact resonate powerfully across audiences;
• Expand earned and contributed revenue-generating activities to support current operations and regional expansion, ensuring long-term sustainability and visibility;
• Design and execute strategic plans for growth of Coro’s impact across the Bay Area and more broadly; 
• Foster partnerships with new partners and clients, cultivating relationships with funders, political leaders, and community stakeholders.

Team Leadership & Development

• Set the tone for the experience of all Coro employees, managing a diverse, multi-generational team, delegating tasks and fostering a culture of collaboration, trust, and accountability;
• Lead, coach, and develop a high-performance senior management team, guiding staff through transitions, supporting their professional development, and maintaining a focus on sustainability;
• Implement effective systems for tracking progress and evaluating program components to measure success.

Leadership & Board Management

• Ensure the ongoing excellence of Coro Northern California's programs and operations, including program evaluation, finance, administration, fundraising, and communications;
• Actively engage and inspire volunteers, board members, partnering organizations, and funders in alignment with Coro's mission;
• Develop and support a strong Board of Directors, fostering strategic involvement in governing and growing the organization.

Financial Management

• Oversee organizational budgets, financial stability, and growth; 
• Have a business development mindset and a keen understanding of nonprofit finance, ensuring Coro remains financially viable while adhering to its mission.

YEAR-1 PRIORITIES

The organization has identified the following Year-1 priorities for Coro Northern California’s new CEO:

• Listening, Learning, & Building Trust: Through deep curiosity and learning, the new CEO will need to gain a thorough understanding of Coro, its people, its fellows, alumni, programs, funders, partnerships, and external stakeholders. The CEO will be expected to demonstrate inspirational and inclusive community building with a focus on staff engagement.
• Fundraising & Maintaining Financial Stability: The CEO will need to focus on funding continuity by maintaining a strong, visible presence in the broader Coro community, as well as reinforcing relationships with existing supporters. The CEO, working closely with the Senior Director of Development, will develop a comprehensive development strategy that unlocks Coro’s ability to identify and secure new funding opportunities that will fuel the organization’s mission-critical near-term and long term work. This work will also include strengthening Coro’s brand and elevating its visibility within the Bay Area and beyond.
• Strategic Vision & Long-Term Planning: The CEO will develop and implement a sustainable leadership structure and operational plan that provides continuity and stability while assessing capacity needs for Coro’s next levels of growth. This includes shaping the organization’s ability to consistently and effectively develop its staff and manage its operations, resources, and programs to achieve its mission over the long term. 

Requirements

In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Chief Executive Officer candidate will have:

• A deep commitment to Coro Northern California’s mission and belief in Coro's role as a non-partisan leadership training organization; 
• Seasoned executive leader with a minimum of 10 years experience in nonprofits, government agencies, or civic organizations;
• Proficiency in fundraising, brand development, marketing and public relations, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders;
• Adaptability to respond to the shifting dynamics of the nonprofit and political landscapes;
• Demonstrated resilience, judgment, and the ability to make decisions while staying open to feedback and learning;
• Demonstrated success in scaling organizations regionally or nationally with a focus on performance and outcomes;
• Strong management skills, including team development, strategic planning, and budget management;
• Experience working effectively with a Board of Directors and cultivating board relationships;
• Prior involvement with Coro (alumni, facilitator, or program host) is highly desirable;
• Comfort being the face of Coro in public settings;
• Well-networked within the Bay Area, with strong connections to civic, business, and philanthropic communities;
• Proven ability to set goals, develop frameworks, and execute long-term strategies;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a persuasive and passionate approach;
• Entrepreneurial mindset, adaptable to change, and innovative in business planning;
• Personal qualities of passion, integrity, idealism, positivity, and self-direction.

Benefits

This is a full-time, exempt position that offers a competitive salary range of $230,000 - $260,000, and robust benefits including medical, dental, 401k match and a generous PTO/flexible work policy. We currently have a hybrid work environment with staff having a minimum of two days in our downtown San Francisco offices each week. You can check out our team here .
