Duties

Crime Scene Investigation

• Processes and photographs less complex crime scenes.
• Searches crime scenes for fingerprints and other physical evidence; develops latent fingerprints.
• Performs less complex laboratory examinations on physical evidence using established methodologies.
• Prepares finished crime scene sketches for court.
• Prepares reports reflecting work activity.
• Testifies in court.

Photo Laboratory

• Operates Photo Lab equipment; uploads crime scene and laboratory images; operates digital photograph applications and software.
• Maintains inventory of film and photographic supplies.
• Takes technical and portraiture photographs.
• Maintains photographic equipment.
• Testifies in court.

Latent Print Laboratory

• Performs less difficult latent to inked fingerprint comparisons.
• Applies existing methodology to the mechanical and chemical development of latent fingerprints from physical evidence.
• Learns latent print input into automated latent print system.
• Testifies in court.

Requirements

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

• Successful completion of a Field Evidence Technician Class, Friction Ridge Detail Class, Crime Scene Investigation/Photography class or other related Forensic Specialist related courses taught by Forensic Science and Police Science professionals

Education and Experience

• Option I: One year in crime scene investigation, fingerprint analysis, or a police or commercial photography laboratory.
• Option II: AA degree or higher in criminal justice with at least eight (8) units of photography.
• Option III: Degree in photography with training in the use of the digital imaging, software, and photographic equipment.
• Option IV: BA/BS degree in criminal justice, forensic science, chemistry, biochemistry, or closely related scientific field involving chemical analysis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• The Forensic Specialist position requires incumbents to work rotating shifts and shift hours (nights, weekends, and holidays).
• After completion of probation, this position will require incumbents to participate in an on-call rotation to handle emergency calls after working normal hours, including midnights, weekends and holidays.
• In addition, each candidate who receives and accepts a formal job offer will be required to provide a mouth swab specimen to be used for Forensic DNA Quality Control purposes. This specimen will be profiled and entered into the Orange County Crime Lab (OCCL) local DNA Database after analysis, and the information will remain confidential. The profile will be used to ensure evidence has not been contaminated by DNA from laboratory personnel; the collection swab and the resulting DNA extract will be destroyed after testing and entry into the OCCL local DNA Database.
• License Required: Possession of a valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher, by date of appointment.
