Do you enjoy working in a fast-paced environment with variety in your work? The California Department of Insurance (CDI) is seeking a dynamic Insurance Examiner and will consider Associate Insurance Examiner.


Insurance Examiner:

Under the general direction of the Senior Insurance Examiner (Supervisor), the Insurance  Examiner analyzes and conducts risk-focused surveillance of licensed entities to ensure their  solvency. Reviews applications requiring the Commissioner's approval to ascertain their  financial stability and compliance with the California Insurance Code, California Code of  Regulations, the Department's rules, and the standard operating procedures of FAD, to be  completed in an accurate and well-organized manner within established guidelines.

Associate Insurance Examiner:
Under general direction of Senior Insurance Examiner (Supervisor), the Associate Insurance  Examiner analyzes and conducts risk-focused surveillance of more complex licensed entities  to ensure their solvency. Reviews applications requiring the Commissioner's approval to  ascertain their financial stability and compliance with the California Insurance Code,  California Code of Regulations, Department’s rules and the standard operating procedures of  Financial Analysis Division (FAD), to be completed in an accurate and well-organized  manner within established guidelines.

This position is designated under the Conflict of Interest Code. The position is responsible  for making or participating in the making of governmental decisions that may potentially have  a material effect on personal financial interests. The appointee is required to complete Form 700 within 30 days of appointment. Failure to comply with the Conflict of Interest Code  requirements may void the appointment.

Working Conditions

  • The incumbent must be able to work in a high-rise building.
  • The incumbent must be able to work in a cubicle setting and open space environment. 
  • The incumbent must be able to lift/carry/move 25-35 pounds for short distances and reach, bend, stretch, and stoop.
  • Occasional travel may be required within and/or outside the state of California via private or  public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.). Travel may include overnight stay and overtime may be required.
  • The incumbent may telework in accordance with CDI's Telework Policy. Teleworking employees may be required to report to their headquarters office location on designated telework days. Travel expenses are not reimbursed, however other authorized transit subsidies do exist for those who qualify.

  • Working knowledge of the use of stand-alone and/or online computer system application programs, e.g., Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, etc.

  • Every 12 months, based on performance evaluation, employees may receive a 5% salary increase until they reach the maximum salary for the position.
