Classification: Senior Investigator (W-2 or Independent Contractor, TBD)
Role Overview The Lead Background Investigator will serve as the primary program lead for KENTECH’s delivery of pre-employment background investigation services to the City of Oakland Fire Department. This role is responsible for investigative quality, compliance oversight, and primary coordination with City stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities - Lead and oversee all background investigations conducted under the Oakland contract
- Ensure full compliance with POST standards, FCRA, California Civil Code, and City requirements
- Review and approve Personal History Statements (PHS)
- Conduct complex or escalated candidate interviews
- Perform final quality review and grading of investigative files prior to City submission
- Prepare and deliver complete investigative reports to Fire Department leadership
- Participate in Character Review meetings as requested
- Oversee investigator workload and surge capacity during academy cycles
- Serve as the primary point of contact between KENTECH and the City
Required Qualifications - Extensive experience conducting public safety background investigations
- Demonstrated working knowledge of California POST Background Investigation standards
- Experience with DOJ and FBI Live Scan processes
- Strong report-writing, documentation, and decision-making skills
- Ability to manage high-volume investigations with strict deadlines
- Proven professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality handling
