Under supervision, a Police Cadet is a non-sworn, part-time classification that assists police personnel in a variety of operations in order to gain practical knowledge of law enforcement. They will obtain practical work experience that supports their career goals.
Employees in this classification may receive training and experience in each of the below duties.
CLASS CHARACTERISITICS:
Incumbents in this position are interested in law enforcement (and the Union City Police Department will provide the opportunity to learn various aspects of police work where they can integrate academic philosophies with practical experience. This position will provide incumbents on-the-job training and the ability to develop professional networking relationships for future service in government or law enforcement.

Travel: Positions in this class may require local and statewide travel as necessary.
BENEFITS:
Medical/Dental/Vision: The City provides up to $1,000/month to purchase medical, dental and vision benefits or cash-in-lieu in the amount of $175 per month.
Retirement:Through CalPERS, employee will be responsible for 8.75% of the CalPERS retirement plan. The appropriate CalPERS Retirement Benefit formula will be applicable: 1) Classic Employees - Tier 1: 2.5% @55, 2) Classic Employees - Tier 2: 2% @60, or 3) PEPRA Employees - 2.0% @62 depending on the individual’s eligibility, as per AB 340. The City does not participate in Social Security therefore there are no Social Security tax deductions (except 1.45% Medicare).
Deferred Compensation Plan:A 457b Deferred Comp Plan and a ROTH IRA plan are available on a voluntary basis.
Sick Leave:Employees shall accrue 1.845 hours of per pay period with no limit on accumulation.
Holidays:33 Paid Holiday hours and 30 Holiday hours placed in a Holiday Time Bank.
Uniform Allowance: An annual uniform allowance of $400.00 made in twenty-six (26) equal payments coinciding with each pay period. New employees would receive an initial uniform allowance of two hundred thirty-five dollars ($235.00) and then begin receiving the annual uniform allowance on the first pay period following July 1 after hire.
Life Insurance and AD&D:$100,000 coverage for both Life Insurance and AD&D; both are employer paid. Additional voluntary supplemental life insurance is available.
Disability Insurance: Short- and Long-Term Disability insurance is provided and paid by the City.
