We are seeking a skilled Fiber Characterization Technician with experience in fiber optic testing and a strong understanding of optical network principles. This role will involve conducting advanced fiber characterization tests, analyzing results, and ensuring the integrity and performance of fiber networks.

Role and Responsibilities for the Fiber I&R Technician

  • Perform fiber characterization testing on long-haul and high-speed fiber optic networks, including:
  • OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer)
  • Insertion Loss (IL) and Optical Return Loss (ORL) measurements
  • Chromatic Dispersion (CD) and Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) testing
  • Document and generate detailed test reports for engineering and project teams
  • Troubleshoot and resolve network issues based on test findings
  • Maintain, calibrate, and ensure the proper functioning of fiber characterization equipment
  • Work closely with field teams, project managers, and clients to ensure testing meets project requirements
  • Adhere to all safety standards, industry regulations, and best practices

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in fiber optic testing and characterization
  • Proficiency in fiber characterization test equipment ( EXFO, VIAVI, Anritsu, or similar platforms )
  • Strong understanding of fiber optic principles, signal transmission, and long-haul network architecture
  • Ability to interpret fiber test results, schematics, and engineering documentation
  • Excellent troubleshooting, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for reporting test results
  • Valid drivers license and ability to travel as needed for projects
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in various environmental conditions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) or equivalent certification
  • CFOS/FC (Fiber Characterization Specialist) certification
  • Experience with fiber optic splicing and termination
  • Familiarity with industry standards related to fiber testing (TIA, IEC, ITU, or similar)

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Associates degree in Electronics, Telecommunications, or related field preferred

Compensation

Pay is hourly + extra production rates + truck and travel as approved per market . Rates specific to market will be provided at the time of resume submission.
